I find it really hard to find things for my students to do when I am gone from school. I teach 2 hour long classes with beginners and advanced students in the same class, that have been in my wood shop for 2 and 3 years. But the subs I get are not quilified to instruct or have knowledge of shop equipment. I well let the students work if sub is ok with the responciblity.Does any one have any ideas.

I will not let my classes use an equipment/tools if I have a sub. To do so in my opinion is opening you and your district up to a potential law suit which you will not win.
I don't know how you lay out your course, but in my case I have weekly written and shop work. If I know I will be gone on a Tuesday and that is generally a shop day, I change the schedule so that the students do written work. If by chance they don't do it with the sub, they will lose the shop day to complete it.
I also use videos that are relevant to the course and would be shown to the class. They just might see it a week or two earlier than what is planned
- I have a worksheet they have to fill out. The worksheet includes such things as: Name of Video, What they are making or building, How this can apply to them and They must list 15 important items from the video.

I have 2 subs that I trust to let the students work. They are ranchers and have their own shops. I let the students work when they are here, only because the subs feel comfortable taking on the responsibility. If I cannot get either one of them. I would have to shut the breakers off and lock the panel, otherwise the other subs will let them work and the subs have no idea what is going on.
