Hi. My first post. I'm working on a website that sets up safety quizzes for students and scores them and archives them. It's six months at least from full operation, but the site is up with some functionality, and it'll give you the idea. I would like teachers to have a look and give me some feedback. It's a lot of work and I'm operating in something of a vacuum. I welcome support and criticism. Frank. www.safetytestingonline.com

I think you are on to something here and I'd like to see how it comes out. Even though I have managed to be relatively accident free for 31 years, I could see this as a very useful tool for managing safety and providing teacher documentation.
I was working from a dial up connection and couldn't get into many parts of the website, which may not be up and running yet. Because of cost and a bad economic situation, many woodshop programs are being phased out. What will a subscription cost? Will it be based on the number of students? Will there be a section with shop safety rules? Will there be a glossary? Sometimes my students are thrown off by a single word. Timber, lumber, stock, material, and wood, can mean the same thing but students from various places may not understand. I thought the trial Scroll Saw Test was well done except for a minor typing error where "no one" came out as "noone".
Will 15 questions always be the limit? Some machines will require more. If you would find it helpful, I'd be glad to send you our state's standards. I can also send you links to some of the PowerPoint's I've created. These might give you ideas. Let me know how I can help.

Thanks for your comments tbockman. I'll give them some thought and get back to you here in a day or two. Meantime I'll fix that noone thing. It's funny, I always spelt it that way. Just showing my age I guess.

Hi tbockman. We had a think about it. We've always planned to sell an annual subscription (http://www.safetytestingonline.com) for around $A100, which at the moment looks like about $US88. That might change before publication (hopefully February 2011), but that's the plan. Usage would be unlimited for students at one school or college. There can only be one administrator per subscription, and that person would be identified by an email protocol. Your thoughts about a glossary are interesting. There are some other possible solutions, but we'll think on that. We do plan to include a set of study sheets that can be downloaded and printed for each test. Fifteen questions are the limit for each quiz if we include a reading file for the quiz, simply because the screen size won't allow for more. We have found that students in the workshop can have literacy problems that defeat their best endeavours. A sound file for each question has been really popular with those students, and their performance and understanding lifts immediately. Their interest level improves noticeably as well. We can increase the number of questions therefore by splitting the quiz into a series, with any number of stages, provided each part of the series has no more than 15 questions. Initially, we'll probably offer a one month trial period for about $A10 through PayPay or similar. I hope this answers your questions.

I thank you for undertaking this task. How long will the completed tests be on file to retrieve? My state requires that we keep the tests for 7 years. I understand that the completed tests could be printed out. But, if you could keep the them on file, a retrieval system would save needed space. Would a copy of my safety test help. Would the administrator (shop teacher) be allowed to adjust(change) the test to suit what they are teaching? How many students can take the test at the same time? We have mobile carts that carry 36 lap tops. More questions will come, as I think about this service you are providing. Once more, I thank you.

Having trouble ... can't get by the Admin log on page. Set up a student name using my own name and the assinged password then went to "TestDrive" with no luck. Any ideas?

Two replies. Sorry about the login, but all is good except I seem to have selected a particularly slow host (iPage.com) I guess I'll migrate to another host when I figure it out. Just be patient with it for the time being, as it just seems to be really slow connecting sometimes, other times really quick. Regarding records, here in Australia we have to keep records in case the parents/guardians decide to litigate, but after the child reaches 18 years the right to litigate transfers to that person, and is renewed until they are 21 years, so if your legal system is similar, 7 years is pretty right.

I would actually like to find out where it says that in any code for my personal information. I only have kept them for 4 or 5 years after graduation.
