Greetings all and happy summer!
Is anyone involved in SkillsUSA? I had the opportunity to attend the national leadership & skills conference last week and was quite impressed with the organization! If you are or have been a Skills advisor I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you like/dislike about it? Do you have any student success stories? Here are pictures of the skill championships: http://skillsusanlcs2010.shutterfly.com/ The first 30 in the album are the cabinetmaking contest, and the rest are other skill contests and events at the conference.
Best Regards,
Adria Torrez Education Manager, AWFS

I have not been real impressed with the leadership in California -- we used to attend and then it got to be a real hassle to learn of when the competition was. Our coordinator at school would send emails and make phone calls without result.
One of my biggest concerns, is that you must register students by the beginning of December(state and national dues) for them to compete in the Feb competition. Do to scheduling around sports, the winter formal and what ever else, we often will lose many students who were willing to give up a Saturday to compete --

I had six students signed up to compete this year in Southern California. The regionals was on four day weekend and most students had family vacations to attend. I had one student enter. The organization is a great motivator for students and I truly believe in it. Like all organizations it takes a team to make it work. John
