I teach at a Alternative high school in Michigan and we are looking into making signs for the camp that houses our school 100 signs to start. Does any one use any of the low cost CNC machines to carve signs, if so what works best for you? I have a budget of $2500 to start and will generate a projected return of $1500 on the first order, so a machine we could expand would be great. Thank you, Shep

How big are the signs?

I use a ShopBot CNC machine and design using Aspire.

I have heard not so good things about the CNC Shark or one that Craftsman sells.

I don't have a carving machine, it would be a fun machine to have though. We make signs with a regular router, the kids love making them! It is their favorite project.

Hi,
I have made some signs for myself and some to sell as well as requested signs for a couple of small business signs, I use a copy stenographer that is using a small router and printed letters. I have to work out and mark out the size and spacing by hand. The effect is reasonable enough. Some times it will take a fare amount of tidying up. I would be tops to have a CNC router to get any size and font from the PC, as well as the spacing and some special effects. I am a CNC programer, operator and some times get frustrated with the quality of my hand work. I have not yet had bad comments about any brand of CNC wood routers. I have seen some that can be made with ply framing and buy the hardware and software. What have you all found?

Hi,
Has anyone used flitching?
How does it go?
I understand it to be a way of lining boxes instead of using cloth.

If you are in the Detroit area, I'd look for a hackerspace (I believe they have one) or some sort of artist collective to reach out to. May be able to "borrow" their machine for a round and get the kinks out.
