Topic: Wood Arts Job Opening-Davidson, North Carolina

I am going to be stepping down from my position as the wood arts teacher at Community School of Davidson in Davidson, NC next year to teach a new course.

We are looking for someone to take over the full time position. This is a great job and I'm sure I'll be kicking myself for switching.

Please pass this along if you can think of someone really dynamic.
Great kids. Supportive Admin. Great town and area to live.

I have a cheap digital micrometer that displays the measurement for them. I was thinking that it might help avoid and speed up the taking of readings at all four corners/ thickest part.

Thank you everyone for the responses.

I am thinking of attaching a micrometer with a short piece of chain. Cheap ones are available and then it would always be with the machine.

I was hoping there would be an easier/ more full proof, but I am hearing that there is no easier way.

Just set up a new surface planer for our wood arts program.

We have made due with a Dewalt 735 for the past three years, but we now have a new 15" Grizzly with spiral cutter head. (It works like a dream.)

My question is how do you instruct students to set up a surface planer like this for the initial cut? The old 735 had a great little indicator that ensured they didn't take off too much on the first pass.

Do you have them use a micrometer? Tape measure? Raise the head until the board is stuck and then back off (prior to turning on of course)?

Any help is appreciated. FYI the manual with the machine offers no help.
Thanks,
Jim D.

I have used Industrial Abrasives 800-428-2222 (No connection except for happy customer) for most of our needs. We use a lot of the shop rolls and they have the best price by far that I have found on them. I would say their other paper is very competitive and of good quality.

You could make a sanding table with holes in the top and a blower/ filter in the bottom.
I have seen plans, but I can't put my hands on them right now.

I have had great success with doing boomerangs with my kids. I built a entire spring unit around the concept with my level 1 kids. They love it and many have continued to build them on their own.
It is a great opportunity to do a cross curricular unit working in math and physics.
We treat it like a science lab and they test, design, modify, and retest their own concepts.
We conclude with a boomerang "competition" modeled after the real things.

I picked up Milwaukee lithium ion 18v kits (drill and impact driver) for under $200.
Run time seems excellent. No battery issues to report after 2 years.
Personal experience with milwaukee battery was very positive. I returned one of my own and it was replaced for free. No guarantee as far as I know. They just did it.

On a separate note:
I love the impact drivers with my students. Far fewer stripped heads and bits hold up much longer. It's what they will use outside of class so why not get the experience.
