I had my kids do drafting in a nine week sequence. At the end they design their own house ( 12x12) max and 3 inches high. I introduce coping saw and glue here. When done I start them on a 9 week small projects sequence and they do 9 projects. My 8th graders do a 3 week refresher and then to the computer lab where they repeat the drawings in versa cad( because it is so simple) then they work in teams of 2,3,4 and design a two story house and then we build it. Then the 8th graders move into a 9 week sequence where they build larger projects. The last 2 weeks of each semester are dedicated to building a rocking chair with a rope/web seat. I too had to buy the versa cadd program with a site license it cost me 800.00 but I own the program. Good Luck

I teach drafting and construction and have for years. Ifound out real quickly that the kids could not read blue prints so I designed a 18 week program for that and to break up the monotany of drawing I take the kids out and have them build what they are drawing ie foundations on paper= go out a layout and build the forms for a small house/ pour the concrete then the elevations=walls frame up the walls electrical drawings=run the wiring roof truss layout= build the roof trusses and so on and so on till you've got a house with plans to boot. Get in touch through my e-mail jeffseiver@aol.com and I'll send you what I have. good Luck

Rob, Just for your info. On edjoin there are perhaps 4-5 shop teaching jobs posted right now in the bay area, if you can relocate. I would have applied for one but my wife wouldn't relocate. The closest to me right now is in Santa barbara ca. Up the coast but just out of commute range. good luck to you too.
