Don't EVER run anything but wood through a running planer! take the knives out and send them to a professional sharpening service!Be sure you have the correct guides in order to set the knives in place.

I turned in my resignation today. two years teaching JH Industrial Arts after one year at a High school and 25 years at the same school before that. I may have to take a praxis to teach history or science in order to stay in education to move my position from teaching 135 miles from home to a closer place just kills me. My family needs me every day now. IA and WW positions have been cut in the schools closer to home. My career is almost done, but I hope you can teach in the same place where you taught most of their parents or older sibs. there's so much more to teaching than content . Here, many never actually know a real man. Shop teachers can fill that spot.

Mine call me Mr. Gordon or Mr.G...I address them by their first names, and occasionally by Mr. or Miss. Most teachers call each other Miss, Ms. or Mrs. or Mr. and shake hands when greeting, especially when in the presence of students. Many students get a handshake, knuckles or a high five when greeting.I do hear many more yessirs and nosirs here than at other schools where I have taught.

Harry Wong was the speaker at the 2007 Missouri ACTE Conference. If you ever get the chance to see him in person, DO SO! He's a riot and left everyone inspired for the next year. He stresses procedures for everything. I found it easy to relate his message to what I teach in Industrial Arts. We all teach kids-We just use tools , materials and procedures to reach them.

A Safety Glasses Cabinet should be standard equipment for all lab type classrooms. They are for the safety and health of students . Some of my students keep their own, but most use the ones provided.A nice looking storage area for safety glasses promotes compliance.

I get big pieces of cardboard from the furniture stores to cover the workbenches. These last longer and nothing soaks through. Those little sponge brushes work well and are cheap.

I have taught woodworking and manufacturing processes for 27 years, and one place you should look for new ideas is www. the parke project.com these projects come with instructions and you can order some of the tooling, too.
