Topic: Foot Stool/ Step Stool
Posted: Sunday, June 6, 2010 10:47:38 PM
i had my students make very basic square footstools this year but had them turn them into various animals, (cut out a head, tail and feet with the band saw)

the students enjoyed them and i got a lot of requests to buy them.

The point of the project was to donate them to a local preschool so most of them are going there.

what i do for materials is get broken pallets from local stores, most of them will gladly give you them for free if you will take them yourself, the store i go to even brakes them down for people to take.

so the models they build cost nothing.

i'll dig up my power points and send them, they dont have any words on them though that way they have to listen to me. i currently have 3 i use to show how to frame floors, walls, and roofing

i like the power points, will probably borrow some of if and add to the ones i have. the information is well laid out and easy to follow

with the foundations do you plan to get into basements, were i am from the only place you will encounter a slab is a garage. very few crawl spaces either.

may want to find out what the local code is on slab thickness if a student asks.

how long you should keep the tests would depend on local laws. There is a certain time period a person has that they could come back and sue the school. once that time period elapses you can toss the tests.

i keep mine for 7 years.

one tactic that ive heard used is if they break a rule they do book work the next day. if they complain then they do more book work.

this teacher has never had a student do more than 3 days of book work.

you use to be able to download them off Google sketchup page but if they are not there i could put them on my website for download.

we have one in our lab.

I'm happy with how it preforms but I don't think it was build for the abuse students tend to put it though.

maintenance wise aside from knife replacement Ive had the wheel holding the belt snap. Luckily it was under warentee so they just replaced it.

i give them an assignment to make their own bedroom in the basement or their own bacheloret / bachelor pad.
I give them guidelines on how to plan for a kitchen/bath/living room/bedroom and give them about 700 square feet.

Have to make sure to remind them that when importing in 3d models not to import a 2000' tv and scale it down to 54" it still takes up 10megs.

Students seam to realy enjoy the assignment and will spend every class for 2-3 weeks working straight to the bell
