Topic: Recruiting advice...how to "hook 'em".

I make pens with my kids, using the mini-lathes from Penn State Industries. That was a pretty hefty initial investment for the lathes and tools, but they've held up pretty well over the years. The other project we do is bandsaw boxes. I figured out how to make them from a book I got on Amazon by Lois Ventura called "Building Beautiful Boxes with Your Band Saw" Call them jewlery boxes, and the girls get interested! Good luck!
P.S.-I also do the CO2 cars as well, and yes, that is a huge draw!

My kids love the bandsaw boxes they make. I bought this book from Amazon, made a few "tweaks" to how my kids make them, and viola! Let me know if you want my instructions.

It looks like this gentleman uses the technique described in the book mentioned earlier in this post.

It wasn't Whitebox. It was the program that came on 3.5 floppy, and it ran on Windows. The original Windows. I had seen it a long time ago, but thought, "There's no way this is the same program they had back in the 90's" It was. Solidworks looks cool. I'm going to try and look into that. Same with Sketchup. Thanks for the ideas!

Does anyone have a 2d or 3d CAD program they use to design CO2 dragsters? I have my kids draft them by hand right now, but I'd like to get them into the computer age. The stuff I got from Pitsco a few years ago was horrible.

Mike-
I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea how to compute your problem! I was a Language Arts teacher that got offered the job to teach "shop" with my only prior tool experience being that I subbed for six weeks for the guy that was leaving. That being said, it's been the best educational decision I've made, as this is my 9th year, and I'm getting more and more in to it each year. Maybe by my 38th year, I'll be able to answer your question!

Does anyone teach measurement anymore? I ask that rhetorically, as so many of my kids come in not being able to read a ruler. What my real question is, what do you guys do to re-teach rulers? It seems that when I go over the basics, the kids all seem to understand, and are bored, but the moment I quiz them, or ask them to cut a board, it all goes out the window. Don't even get me started on how many kids have asked me how they're supposed to read inches with a metric ruler!
