Alex:

I'm former Army EOD and a former shop teacher. I currently work for the VA as an Occupational Therapist. If I can help in any way contact me directly at joebarrywoodworker@comcast.net.

The advice that I wish I had when I gotten when I got out of the service was to talk to as many people in the field as possible and visit their shops. Pick their brains. People are willing to share especially if you ask them what they wished they'd done or would have done differently.

Both the corps and PTSD will make it a challenge to deal with the political correctness you will encounter in education. I was the only veteran in every school I ever taught in and the directness and no-nonsense attitude of the military is not welcomed or rewarded. The good news is that you can play that card for additional support from Vocational Rehabilitation in making the transition.

I recommend you ask around and see if you can observe a day in a couple of different schools and programs so that you know what you are getting into. You will find great differences between systems and individual teachers. Talk to the teachers about their daily and programmatic issues.

I posted industrial signage about eyewear requirements at the entrance to the shop. It's fun to watch the kids berate administrators to wear safety glasses when they make a rare foray into the shop.
Topic: Running "business" out of shop (ramble)

The real irony in my conversation with my "fearless leader" was that I was meeting a state requirement for a processes of industry class. I had the kids set up a "company", do all the planning, pricing, bidding, production, sale, and payoff of the "investors" (including their sweat equity) The superintendent said I could meet my educational goals without making a profit. Call me aa capitalist but, seeing how a business can make money is both the object of the lesson and one heck of a learning moment!
Topic: canoe-building in your classes

When I bought a copy of the book "The Stripper's Guide to Canoe Construction" the vendor sent an invoice for "The Stripper's Guide". A had a bit of explaining to do to the Superintendent!

I did strip canoes and had the molds on wheels and could wheel them out the garage door and into a storage shed at the end of each class. If I had a higher ceiling I would have raised them up to the rafters within the shop just as is done in boat shops.

I did the canoes as a mass production project. We sold the canoes at the end of the year and covered all my costs and most of the rest of my budget. The result was an angry administration that told me I was not supposed to "run a business out of the shop" and ordered to never do it again. So much for teaching entrepeneurship !

When I went to Keene State College(NH) in 1977-80 they were strong on machine processes. I had to learn to use hand tools elsewhere - at The Apprenticeshop. And despite taking what was considered an "overload" in woodworking, I was not really a competent woodworker until I spent a couple of years in the trade building cabinets and furniture. My biggest criticism of the tech ed model is that it is shallow and only skims the surface of the material. The teacher, at the very least, should have a depth of content knowledge and skill.

A quick Google finds that the Freud 99-515, like many panel raisers, is rcommended for use in a router table only. On a site with so many postings about student safety, I have to ask why do we want to skate on thin ice and introduce potentially dangerous techniques?

I used to host Japanese college students. They were aghast at the idea that I worked a weekend job as a clerk/demonstrator at the local Woodcraft store. Their response was similar to that we would have if an emergency room doctor told us he worked mucking stalls in a stable to make ends meet!
