Two of my classes are going to be making drawers for a bench project. The sides of the drawers are 1/2" x 4" x 8" and the ends are about 18" long.
I've been trying to think of the most efficient material for these but it seems to me that I'm probably going to have to go with 1 x 6 pine and cut it down and plane it to 1/2". Seems kind of wasteful to me. Can't use plywood because we're finger jointing them. I am toying with the idea of making the drawer a little shorter so I can get by with 1 x 4.
Any other ideas?

What about getting some 5/4 popular and resawing it down to 1/2 inch. Two for one.

I have had decent results with finger joints in baltic birch plywood, it might be worth slightly sub-par results to save some money/work.
